The Office of Student Engagement and the Agnese Nels Haury Program Invest in Engaged Learning

The Office of Student Engagement announces awards of up to $10,000 to each of the following faculty and their community partner organizations to develop new engagement learning experiences in Academic Year 2017-2018. All awarded projects are focused on activities related to Community Partnership. In addition, two faculty were awarded additional grants of up to $10,000 specifically for projects designed to engage students in critical conversations related to competency in Sustainability, through strategic investment from the Agnese Nels Haury Program in Environment and Social Justice.


For projects focused on the Sustainability competency, awards were made to:

Erin Deely, Director of Recruitment and Engagement, Science Administration, in partnership with Amy Rusk, Pima County Public Library, for UA Science S.T.E.M. Cats.

Ellen McMahon, Professor, School of Art, in partnership with Peggy Turk Boyer, Intercultural Center for the Study of Deserts and Oceans, Puerto Penasco, Sonora, for Sea of Support Tile Mural.


For projects focused on any of the Engaged Learning Competencies, awards were made to:

Zoe Cohen, Assistant Professor, Physiology, in partnership with Leslie Ritter, Stroke Resource Center of Arizona, for University of Arizona Physiology Club & Stroke Resource Center of Southern Arizona Partnership.

Leah Duran, Assistant Professor, Teaching/Learning and Sociocultural Studies, in partnership with Lisa McCorke, Tucson Unified School District, for Wildcat Literacy Studio.

Edward Franklin, Associate Professor, Agriculture Education, in partnership with Joshua Moore, Pima County Cooperative Extension, for Solar Clovers Student Engagement Project.
